I though we should have a general post, which can help all the members of the site. so what are the different factors you should consider when buying a digital camera...here's my contribution, please add to it.

The life of battery
Number of Megapixels
Zoom Lens
Exposure Control
User Controls

Cheers

The sutrdiness of the camera. You don't want some flimsy little thing that is going to fall apart every few minutes. Also you should obviously consider the price. Some cameras are cheaper, and just as good as other, more expensive ones.

To test the sturdiness you could always bash the camera against the shelf a few dozen times ;)

One aspect I notice people get caught off is optical vs digital zoom. If I recall correctly, optical zoom is the actual zoom (the camera lens zooming in), while digital is just basically enlarging the image.

So optical zoom would most likely be far more valuable than digital zoom.

More factors to consider:

* Shutter delay. I mean the time delay from when the shutter is pressed until the picture is actually taken. It should be small otherwise you cannot control when the picture is taken.

* The amount of noise that is generated from the sensor or the electronics. It should be small to get a clear image. The noise is most present when using high ISO numbers. (high sensitivity)

* The amount of moiré should be small. Moiré is distorsion that is generated because of periodicity in the image. A camera with high moiré is e.g. not suitable for taking pictures of fabrics.

* Focus. The sharpness and the speed of the auto focus. It is also good to know how good it works when the amount of light is small.

Don't forget to ask some friends and/or check some reviews (magazines or online reviews). You can try dpreview.com for example or search the internet for "digital photography reviews" or "digital camera reviews". I hope you find a good camera! :D
