I heard recently that 400 film (for speed shots) don't actually work on low quality cameras. Is this true, or just the camera guy's way of trying to make a sale? ;)

I've tried it before on a poor camera, but I'm not perceptive enough to notice any difference. Although I did note that it seemed a bit more blurred for some reason.

Also, are there any effects of buying 400 film, but shooting still shots with them?

There's more grain in the images from a 400 speed film but that's part of the trade off for the extra speed. Assuming the level of grain isn't a problem for you at any given level of magnification than there's absolutely no reason that 400 speed film cannot be used for still photography.

And, as far as I am aware, there's no reason that 400 speed film shouldn;t work on *any* modern camera...
