Just wondering how camera focus works?

For example, if you aim at an object 2m away (but the background is a 10KM mountain), will the camera only get the 2m object clearly, or can it also catch the mountain clearly? For close-range and far shots (mixed), where should I aim at?

It depends on aperture and focal distance. The focus can span over a large distance if you use a high number for the aperture (corresponds to a narrow opening) and use a small focal distance (i.e. a wide-angle lense). If I'm not mistaken: The focus covers a larger distance behind the actual focus point than in front of the focus point. Approximately 1/3 in front of the focus point and 2/3 behind the focal point.
