| You can just mark your photo with the copyright symbol (either front or back) and your name (as the photographer) in order to protect it. |

It is really almost the same... just place your copyright anywhere on the image (easy to do with almost all photo editing software these days). Alternatively, a statement of the copyright beneath/beside the image counts just as much from a legal standpoint (although that is easier to ignore for the less legally versed/ethical). For even greater security you can digitally watermark your images (just do a simple google search of "watermarking digital images" for some leads if thsi is of interest).
