You can just mark your photo with the copyright symbol (either front or back) and your name (as the photographer) in order to protect it.

It is really almost the same... just place your copyright anywhere on the image (easy to do with almost all photo editing software these days). Alternatively, a statement of the copyright beneath/beside the image counts just as much from a legal standpoint (although that is easier to ignore for the less legally versed/ethical). For even greater security you can digitally watermark your images (just do a simple google search of "watermarking digital images" for some leads if thsi is of interest).
